Knockout Phase Explained
The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage features a record-breaking 32 teams in the first single-elimination round. Following the expanded group stage, the bracket will be populated by the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams.
Unlike previous tournaments, the extra knockout round (Round of 32) means teams must now win five consecutive matchesafter the group stage to lift the iconic trophy. This adds an extra layer of stamina and strategy to the world's most watched sporting event.
