FAQ: MLS Standings & Rules

How do MLS standings tiebreakers work?

If two or more MLS teams are tied on points, the first tiebreaker is the total number of wins (not goal difference). The subsequent tiebreakers are Goal Difference (GD), Goals For (GF), fewest disciplinary points, and road goal difference.

How many MLS teams make the playoffs?

A total of 18 teams (9 from the Eastern Conference and 9 from the Western Conference) qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top 7 qualify directly, while the 8th and 9th seeds play a Wild Card game.

What is the difference between the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup?

The Supporters' Shield is awarded to the team with the best regular season record across the entire league. The MLS Cup is awarded to the winner of the post-season playoff tournament.

Do MLS standings include draws/ties?

Yes, unlike other major American sports, MLS games can end in a draw during the regular season. A win awards 3 points, a draw awards 1 point, and a loss awards 0 points.
