The Sports Cord-Cutter's Calendar: When to Subscribe and Cancel Every Streaming App

The secret to saving money on live sports streaming is simple: do not keep your subscriptions active year-round.

Unlike Netflix or Disney+, which people tend to keep active indefinitely, live sports are strictly seasonal. Leagues play for a set number of months, crown a champion, and go dormant for the off-season. If you keep Peacock, Paramount+, or ESPN+ active during months when your sport is not playing, you are paying a "silent tax" to streaming networks.

By cycling your subscriptions—subscribing on kickoff day and canceling immediately after the championship—you can cut your annual streaming bill in half. Here is the master month-by-month calendar to optimize your subscription cycles.

The Seasonal App Lifecycles

Different apps hold the rights to different sports seasons. The table below outlines the exact months you actually need each streaming service.

Streaming Service Active Sports Season Prime Months to Subscribe When to Cancel
Amazon Prime Video NFL (Thursday Night Football) September – January End of January
Peacock Premium NFL (Sunday Night), Premier League, Big Ten CFB August – May End of May (or January if only NFL)
Paramount+ NFL (CBS games), Champions League September – May End of May (or January if only NFL)
ESPN+ NHL, La Liga, Bundesliga, FA Cup, CFB September – May End of May
Apple TV+ (MLS) Major League Soccer February – December Early December

Month-by-Month Action Plan

Here is how to manage your active subscriptions throughout the year.

January: The NFL Playoff Clean-up

  • Status: High NFL action, but the season is ending.
  • Action:
    • Keep Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, and Paramount+ active through the end of January to catch the Wild Card, Divisional, and Championship rounds.
    • Cancel Alert: On the day of the Conference Championships, turn off auto-renew for Prime Video and Peacock (unless you watch Premier League soccer).
    • Keep Paramount+ active if you watch the UEFA Champions League, which resumes in February.

February – April: The Spring Switch

  • Status: NBA and NHL playoff races heat up. Champions League knockout stages begin. MLS begins.
  • Action:
    • Activate: Subscribe to Apple TV (MLS Season Pass) in February if you follow US soccer.
    • Keep Active: Keep ESPN+ (for NHL out-of-market games) and Paramount+ (for Champions League mid-week games) active.
    • Dormant: Prime Video and Peacock (unless watching Premier League) should remain canceled.

May: The Championship Drop

  • Status: Premier League concludes. Champions League final is late May/early June. NHL and NBA playoffs reach the finals.
  • Action:
    • Cancel Alert: Turn off auto-renew on Peacock immediately after the final Premier League matchday in mid-May.
    • Cancel Alert: Turn off auto-renew on Paramount+ immediately after the Champions League Final.
    • Cancel Alert: Turn off auto-renew on ESPN+ once the NHL conference finals finish.

June – July: The Summer Freeze

  • Status: The dead zone for major US sports leagues.
  • Action:
    • Your Bill Should Be Near Zero: Almost all sports apps should be inactive.
    • Exceptions: Only keep Apple TV (MLS Season Pass) if you follow Major League Soccer, or watch local baseball streams via your RSN/MLB.tv.
    • Enjoy the summer and let your subscription budget recover.

August: The Warm-up

  • Status: European soccer leagues kick off. NFL preseason begins.
  • Action:
    • Activate: Resubscribe to Peacock Premium in early August to catch the opening matchdays of the Premier League.
    • Preseason NFL games are mostly broadcast locally, so an OTA antenna is sufficient; do not subscribe to NFL-specific packages yet.

September – December: Peak Sports Season

  • Status: NFL, College Football, NBA, NHL, and soccer are all running simultaneously.
  • Action:
    • Activate: Subscribe to Prime Video (or Prime), Paramount+, and ESPN+ in the first week of September.
    • Activate: Keep Peacock active.
    • This is the most expensive time of the year, but because you saved money during the spring and summer, the temporary increase is much easier to manage.

How to Cancel Without Missing Games

Many fans hesitate to cancel subscriptions because they fear they will lose access immediately.

Streaming services do not work like traditional utilities. When you cancel a subscription, you keep full access until the end of your current billing cycle.

  • Best Practice: If you subscribe to Peacock on September 7th to watch the opening NFL game, you can go into your account settings and cancel the subscription on September 8th.
  • You will still be able to stream games until October 7th, and the subscription will simply close itself without auto-renewing. This prevents you from forgetting to cancel later and paying for accidental months.
